Payday Super: Is Your Business Paying Super on Time?

Since 1 July 2026, employers must pay super with every pay run, and it has to reach each employee's fund within 7 business days of payday. The ATO's free clearing house has closed, and late payments now attract an automatic charge. Four months in, it's worth checking that your payroll set-up is doing what you think it's doing.

  • A review of how your payroll software processes super each pay run
  • A check that contributions are reaching funds inside the 7 business day window
  • Support replacing the ATO's closed Small Business Superannuation Clearing House
  • Cash flow planning for more frequent super payments

What Changed for Employers

Payday Super changes how often super is paid, how it gets to the fund and how quickly the ATO can see a missed payment. Each change has a practical effect on payroll and cash flow.

Payment Timing

Super is now due for each payday rather than each quarter. A business paying weekly makes 52 super payments a year instead of four, and each one needs to land with the fund inside 7 business days.

The Clearing House

Many small employers relied on the ATO's free Small Business Superannuation Clearing House. It closed on 1 July 2026, so super now needs to go through another SuperStream-compliant channel, usually your payroll software or a commercial clearing house.

Late Payments

Super that arrives late attracts the super guarantee charge, with interest and penalties on top of the amount owed. Paying the shortfall afterwards doesn't remove those extra costs, so prevention matters more than correction.

Cash Flow

Under the old rules, super could sit in the business account for up to four months before it was due. That buffer is gone. Super now leaves the business alongside wages, which changes the shape of your cash flow through the year.

Is Your Set-Up Working?

Many businesses made the switch smoothly. Others changed software settings in a rush before 1 July and haven't looked since. A short check now confirms which group you're in.

You're Likely on Track If

  • your payroll software sends super automatically with each pay run
  • you can see the date each contribution was received by the fund
  • your new starters' fund details are set up before their first payday
  • your cash flow forecast already includes super with every pay cycle

A Review May Be Worth It If

  • you used the ATO's Small Business Superannuation Clearing House
  • you still pay super in a batch at month or quarter end
  • you run more than one pay cycle, or pay bonuses and commissions
  • contributions have bounced back from a fund
  • you're not sure how long payments take to reach the fund

Your Questions Answered

What is Payday Super?

Payday Super is the requirement for employers to pay super guarantee contributions for each payday, rather than quarterly. It started on 1 July 2026 and is administered by the ATO.

How quickly does super need to be paid now?

Super generally needs to be received by the employee's fund within 7 business days of payday. The deadline is when the fund receives it, so allow for processing time in your software or clearing house.

What happened to the Small Business Superannuation Clearing House?

It closed permanently on 1 July 2026 and the ATO isn't replacing it. Businesses that used it need another SuperStream-compliant way to pay, such as their payroll software or a commercial clearing house.

What happens if super is paid late?

Late super attracts the super guarantee charge, which the ATO assesses. It includes interest and penalties on top of the super owed, and paying the shortfall later doesn't remove those costs.

How does the ATO know if super is late?

The ATO uses Single Touch Payroll reporting and data from super funds to check how much super is owed and whether it arrived on time. Missed payments are easier to detect than they were under quarterly reporting.

Does Payday Super apply to my small business?

Yes. It applies to every employer in Australia, including small businesses, family businesses and sole traders who employ staff.

Is the ATO allowing any leniency in the first year?

The ATO has published a Practical Compliance Guideline, PCG 2026/1, setting out its compliance approach for the first year of Payday Super. Whether it applies depends on your circumstances, so speak with us before relying on it.

Is this page from the ATO?

No. Future Wealth Partners is an independent firm and isn't affiliated with the ATO. For official guidance, visit ato.gov.au/paydaysuper.
